Bhai, salary badh gayi — but will your kharcha also badh jaye?

Last week a friend texted me from Ichhra Bazaar. He was standing outside a bike shop, staring at a used Honda CG125 2022 model. Price tag? Rs. 1,85,000. The dealer was saying "25,000 extra for DHA Phase 5 delivery bhai." My friend asked me: Should I buy now or wait for budget announcement? I told him: Wait. And now the budget is here. Government announced 7% salary increase for employees and 10% minimum wage hike. Sounds good on paper. Lekin mainay apni zindagi mein dekha hai — jab salary badhti hai, cheezein bhi mehngi ho jati hain.

I remember 2019 when I was buying a used Samsung A50 from Hafeee Centre. Same month salary increment aaya tha. Next week, phone prices went up Rs. 3,000. Used bike dealers in Ring Road Lahore started asking 5-7% more. So here's my honest take as someone who has haggled over rent in Johar Town and sold an old Civic in Gulberg — what this budget actually means for you.

Salary increase by 7% — who actually benefits?

The budget proposes 7% raise for government employees. That's clear. But if you work in private sector, don't get too excited. Private companies don't follow government budgets. I've seen this pattern in Lahore's business districts — Gulberg, DHA, even F-10 Markaz in Islamabad. Government announces hike, private employers say "we'll see." Most don't increase until forced by inflation or union pressure.

Tip: If you're a government employee, your basic pay scale will increase. But allowances might not change immediately. Check your payslip after July 2026 — some allowances are fixed and won't rise with basic pay.

Minimum wage is going up by 10%. That's good news for daily wage workers, security guards, domestic staff, and small shop helpers. In Lahore's Liberty Market, I've seen helpers working for Rs. 25,000-28,000 per month. With 10% hike, that becomes Rs. 27,500-30,800. Still not enough for DHA rent — but something.

For pensioners, 7% increase in pension is proposed. My uncle retired from WAPDA and lives in Baghbanpura. He said, "7% se kya hoga? Petrol already 300+ rupees." He's not wrong. But at least it's something.

What becomes expensive immediately after salary hike?

This is where I share a hard lesson I learned in 2022. When salaries rise, three things go up within 60 days:

  • Rent in good areas: Landlords in DHA Phase 5, Johar Town, and Gulberg follow news. They know you got a raise. Expect rent increase of 5-10% when your lease renews.

  • Used car and bike prices: Dealers in Ring Road Lahore, Raja Market Rawalpindi, and Saddar Karachi will say "sab mehnga ho gaya bhai." A Honda Civic 2021 Rebirth that was Rs. 3.8 Lac might become Rs. 4.1 Lac.

  • Second-hand electronics: I saw this happen at Hafeez Centre after every budget. An iPhone 12 Pro Max PTA approved that was Rs. 1,40,000 becomes Rs. 1,55,000 overnight.

A dealer in Hall Road once told me: "Salary increase ka matlab hai extra paisa logon ke paas. Extra paisa ka matlab hai demand. Demand ka matlab hai price up. Simple economics bhai."

Used market prices right now — city by city

Bikes (Honda CG125, CD70, YBR 125)

I personally checked Ring Road Lahore last week. Here's what I found:

  • Honda CD70 2022 — Rs. 75,000 to 85,000 (Lahore), Rs. 80,000-92,000 (Karachi)

  • Honda CG125 2023 — Rs. 1,70,000 to 1,95,000 (Lahore), higher in Islamabad by Rs. 5,000-8,000

  • YBR 125 2022 — Rs. 1,45,000 to 1,60,000 in Rawalpindi's Raja Market

After the salary hike, expect these to rise by Rs. 5,000-10,000 within a month. If you're planning to buy, don't wait. Browse used bikes on Bechly.pk — you might find private sellers who haven't raised prices yet.

Cars (Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Suzuki Alto)

Used car market in Pakistan is already inflated. With salary hike, dealers will push prices higher. Here's current range in Lahore's Qabza Group and Karachi's Saddar market:

  • Suzuki Alto 2022 VXR — Rs. 23 Lac to 26 Lac (PTA approved, non-accidental)

  • Honda Civic 2021 Rebirth Oriel — Rs. 48 Lac to 55 Lac (varies by city, Karachi cheapest)

  • Toyota Corolla 2020 Altis — Rs. 42 Lac to 49 Lac

Warning: After salary increase announcements, repainted accident cars increase in the market. Dealers buy damaged cars, repaint them cheaply, and sell as "clean." Always bring a mechanic when buying a used car. And check listings on Bechly.pk — private sellers are often more honest than big dealers.

Rent prices — where will they go up?

I've rented in three cities: Lahore's DHA Phase 5 (expensive), Karachi's Gulshan-e-Iqbal (mid-range), and Islamabad's G-10 (affordable). Here's my prediction. Landlords in high-demand areas will raise rent by 5-10% within 2-3 months of this budget. Areas most affected:

  • Lahore — DHA Phase 5, Johar Town, Gulberg, Model Town

  • Karachi — Clifton, DHA, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, North Nazimabad

  • Islamabad — F-10, F-11, E-11, G-10

  • Rawalpindi — Bahria Town, Gulraiz Colony, Satellite Town

A 1-bed apartment in Johar Town that costs Rs. 35,000-40,000 now could become Rs. 38,000-44,000. A portion in DHA Phase 5 for Rs. 70,000 could go up to Rs. 77,000. Check current rental listings on Bechly.pk before signing any new lease. Compare prices from multiple areas.

What about mobile phones and electronics?

Hafeez Centre Lahore and Sunday Bazaar Karachi are where I usually buy used phones. After budget, prices will adjust. Here's what I saw last week:

  • Samsung Galaxy A54 2023 — Rs. 65,000 to 78,000 (PTA approved, box packed used)

  • iPhone 12 128GB — Rs. 1,15,000 to 1,35,000 (depends on battery health and PTA status)

  • OnePlus 7T 2022 — Rs. 45,000 to 55,000 in Karachi, slightly higher in Lahore

My advice? Buy now if you need a phone. After salary hike, demand increases. Sellers know this. Browse used mobiles on Bechly.pk — many individual sellers who just want quick cash and won't hike prices overnight.

Note: Before buying any used phone, check PTA approval using the IMEI number. I've seen people buy phones from Hafeez Centre that stopped working on Pakistani networks after 60 days because they were non-PTA. Read our full PTA approval guide here.

What sellers should do right now

If you're selling something — a bike, car, phone, furniture — this is your window. Demand will increase in the next 4-6 weeks. People have more money (or think they do). Prices can go up 5-15% depending on the item.

  • List your item now before the market floods with new sellers

  • Take clear photos — I've seen blurry photos on classifieds and the seller lost 30% of the price

  • Mention "price negotiable" but keep a bottom line in mind

  • Post a free ad on Bechly.pk — it takes 2 minutes and reaches buyers in Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, and all major cities

Warning: Scammers become more active after budget announcements. They know people have money. Never share your EasyPaisa OTP. Never accept fake bank transfer screenshots. Always check payment reflects in your account before handing over the item. Read our full safety guidelines here.

Should you buy or wait?

Honest answer? If you have the cash now, buy now. In my experience watching Pakistan's used market for 8 years, prices rarely drop after a salary hike. They stabilize after 3-4 months but never go back to pre-budget levels.

But if you're buying a big item like a car or property, wait 2 months. Let the initial demand spike settle. People rush to buy immediately after salary news. Then dealers hike prices. After 60 days, demand normalizes and you can negotiate better. I did this when buying my used Civic — waited 2 months after a similar announcement and saved Rs. 1,50,000.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will private companies also increase salaries by 7%?

No, the 7% increase is only for government employees. Private companies are not bound by this budget. Some large companies might match it to retain talent, but smaller businesses likely won't. Ask your HR department directly.

When will the minimum wage hike take effect?

Usually within 60-90 days of budget approval. The government will issue a notification. However, many small employers in Hall Road, Liberty Market, and Bolton Market may not implement it immediately without pressure.

Will used car prices really go up after salary increase?

In my experience, yes. Dealers in Ring Road Lahore, Qabza Group Karachi, and Raja Market Rawalpindi raise prices within 2-4 weeks. They know people have extra cash. If you can buy now, do it.

How can I sell my used bike fast after this budget?

Clean your bike thoroughly — I've seen a clean bike sell for Rs. 10,000 more. Take photos in daylight. List on Bechly.pk for free. Mention "2022 model" not just "used." Price slightly below dealer rates to attract private buyers.

Is this a good time to rent a new apartment?

Rent now before landlords raise prices. Sign a 1-year contract to lock in current rates. Focus on areas like Baghbanpura, Ichhra, or Gulshan-e-Ravi in Lahore — they see slower rent hikes than DHA or Johar Town.
